Lodging and Camping

There are several options for pre-put-in lodging.  The Hammer Creek Recreation Site has a fee campground, and the nearby small town of Whitebird has a motel and a couple of bar/restaurants.  There are also several RV parks in the vicinity.  Grangeville and Riggins both have a broader variety of lodging and dining options. About an hour and a half northeast is the Idaho Guest Ranch, River Dance Lodge, on the banks of the Clearwater River.  Lodging and dining post trip can also be readily accomplished in either Clarkston, Washington or Lewiston, Idaho.

The beautiful Salmon River offers some of the most pristine camping opportunities of any river in the world.  The mighty granitic peaks of the river’s headwaters erode and wash downstream, depositing into some of the most exquisite beachfront property you will lay eyes upon.  Camping along the river is not assigned, though there is a rule against “camp running.”  Thus, you are not allowed to go ahead to camp prior to 1:30pm unless you are traveling with your entire party.  Please also be considerate of all river users and remove all of your garbage from the beach- food bits included!  Remember to follow all the practices of Leave No Trace.
